ABOUT

Tomoko Akaboshi is a Japanese violinist, music contractor, and music producer who became the first woman of color to contract a Broadway musical  (A Strange Loop, 2020 Pulitzer Prize, 2022 TONY for Best Musical).

Born in Tokyo, Tomoko started her career as a musician at age twenty, and has since performed and interpreted for internationally renowned artists such as Alan Silvestri, Andrea Bocelli, Alicia Keys, Coldplay, The Verve and more. Her performing experience includes studio recordings and TV soundtracks as well as acting as concert master for the Broadway musical, Amazing Grace and Tokyo productions of Broadway musicals, Spring Awakening and West Side Story.

Tomoko has coordinated and interpreted for musical productions in the United States, Japan, Germany, Australia, Slovakia, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. These productions encompass a variety of musical styles, including classical, film, theater, jazz and video game music. She has worked with orchestras such as the Tokyo Philharmonic and the Czech Philharmonic, and on orchestral recording sessions for video game titles such as "Resident Evil 6/Biohazard 6" (CAPCOM) and "Binary Domain" (SEGA). She has also interpreted for six-time Emmy Award winning composer and conductor, Mark Watters, for "Star Wars in Concert," and for Grammy-winning jazz artist, Maria Schneider, at the Tokyo Blue Note.

Using management skills obtained from her extensive musical experience, she provides coordination and management/producing services to American artists and companies for their dealings with Japan, and vice versa. Tomoko aspires to connect the Japanese and American cultures to one another. She is the founder and director of  Tokyo Strings Workshop, a source for Japanese strings players to learn to play in contemporary American styles like jazz and bluegrass.
